My Skincare Routine

One of the top questions I get asked on the blog is about my skincare routine.  And while I LOVE trying new products and experimenting with anti-aging potions as much as the next thirty-something, I have found a routine with skincare that I more or less stick to for the long term.

The reason?

I HAVE NOT always had good skin!

In fact, my skin was very red and inflamed at one point and I suffered from acne and would get pimples all the time.  When I was pregnant with Marlowe my skin was at its worst – I would cry all the time about it and barely felt ok leaving the house without a lot of makeup on.  Sometimes I even felt like I could barely look somebody in the eye when they were talking to me – I was so embarrassed and felt so uncomfortable!

A few months in to my pregnancy, my good friend introduced me to the facialist Shani Darden and it totally changed my skin, and my confidence! She put me on a routine while pregnant that gave me the best skin of my life – and since then, with the discovery of a few new products, my skincare routine has settled into what it is now.

Whereas there are always some great “budget” finds with skincare (I have a few in my routine, actually!), I generally find that when it comes to skincare you get what you pay for.  The pricier products tend to have better technology.

Clear skin is SUPER important to me since I have to be in front of the camera all the time, so skincare is the area in my personal life where I make that special investment.  I have never felt so great in my own skin as I do today, and being able to have a clear and glowing complexion without having to put on makeup every day has really make my life so much easier and happier.

Today I thought I would share all of the products I use regularly, as well as walk you through both my morning and my evening skincare routine…

Protect & Perfect Intense Eye Cream

Boots No.7

I started using this eye cream in 2017 and really love it.  It’s a great consistency, is affordable, and has everything I need in an eye cream right now.  I hadn’t really used eye cream regularly until I turned 30, and I have been hearing ever since how much it really does help stave off wrinkles.

iS Clinical Active Serum

iS Clinical

I credit this serum with keeping me acne free ever since I started using it when I was pregnant with Lowie.  It’s magical, and I’m totally obsessed with it! It’s more watery than a normal serum, and you pat it on your face with your fingertips

Vichy Pureté Thermale One Step Micellar Cleansing Water & Makeup Remover for Sensitive Skin

This is the best makeup remover I have ever used! It’s so refreshing, and takes all my makeup off so easily– I love it! Some people I know use only this to clean their faces at night, actually!

iS Clinical Cleansing Complex

iS Clinical

This cleanser has been my favorite since Shani turned me on to it four years ago! I keep on coming back to it because it cleanses so well without drying out my skin.  It foams up slightly when you add a bit of water.

SK-II Facial Treatment Essence

This is the most indulgent facial product I own and also the best.  I can never go back! I’m absolutely in love with this stuff after it perfected my skin this past summer.

iS Clinical Extreme Protect SPF 30 Sunscreen

iS Clinical

This comprehensive sunscreen/facial lotion is a powerhouse.  I love that it protects me so well from harmful rays while also not clogging my pores – ever.  I use it every single day, even in the winter!

Control Corrective Sulfur Calming Mask

Control Corrective Skincare Systems

If I ever get a random pimple, this mask knocks it out! I use it as a mask or even as a spot treatment overnight.  I used it a lot more often during my pregnancies when my skin was really hormonal and prone to more random breakouts.

Vichy Mineral Double Glow Peel Face Mask

Yes, the label on my jar of this is in French.  Don’t ask. LOL.  I put the name in English above! This is an all-around awesome mask that helps me deeply exfoliate my skin to reveal that much-coveted glow.  It’s also not too expensive!

Agent Nateur Holi (Rose) Shiva Rose Natural Organic Deodorant

Agent Nateur

I mean underarm skin is still skin, right?! LOL.  I figured I would include my favorite deodorant in this post also since it is as much a part of my routine as my facial products!

Resurface by Shani Darden Retinol Reform Peel

Resurface by Shani Darden

I started using this product of Shani’s after I was done breastfeeding Marlowe (you can’t use retinol while pregnant or breastfeeding) and it perfected my skin even more! It’s such an incredible anti-aging part of my routine, and I can’t go without it. It’s different from other retinols I had used in the past because of how comfortable it is on the skin.  It didn’t make me red, flaky, or irritated at all!

Control Corrective Oil-Free Hydrating Lotion

Control Corrective Skincare Systems

This is the best skin moisturizer, I’ve been using it for years! It is hydrating without clogging my skin at all and wears great under makeup.  I keep coming back to it no matter what else I try. It’s also very affordable for how great of a product it is!

My Nighttime Routine

Remove Makeup

Remove all makeup with the VICHY micellar water.  I soak cotton pads with it and then gently wipe to remove.

Cleanse will with iS Clinical Cleansing complex.  Rinse with warm water. Pat dry.

Apply SK-II Facial Essence

Soak a cotton pad with SKII Facial Treatment Essence and pat gently all over the skin pressing on slowly.  I apply to my face and neck.

Next, I alternate between using each of these every other night:

STEP 4 (Every Other Night)

Apply Retinol Reform Peel

Press a pump of the Retinol Reform into your palm and gently smooth over your entire face and neck, pressing it gently into the skin.  Allow it to dry for several seconds before moving to the next step.

STEP 4 1/2 (Every Other Night)

Apply iS Clinical Active Serum

Apply a dropper of Active Serum into the palm of your hand and press gently into your face and neck.  Allow the product to dry for several seconds before moving on to the next step.

Apply Oil-Free Hydrating Lotion

Apply a small amount (I use the size of a dime) of Oil-Free Hydrating Lotion on to your face and press in gently. (In the warmer months I skip this step, and go without moisturizer on top of the retinol or active serum!)

Apply Eye Cream

Apply a dab of eye cream on to each pinky and press gently around your eye area.  Do not rub it in! It will weaken the skin and cause wrinkles!

Masks & Exfoliating Wipes

Once a week, after cleansing my face and before the other steps, I apply either the Sulfur Calming Mask or the Double Glow Facial Peel Mask.  Normally I only use the sulfur mask the one week a month that my skin is super hormonal (so fun, right? UGH )  I LOVE face masks, and often try and apply other masks during the week – but I make sure to save room for these two since they’re my tried and true faves.  Once every couple of weeks, I will also use one of these deep exfoliating wipes.  They’re great for making sure you are sloughing off dead skin cells to make you glow and allow your facial products to penetrate more deeply and effectively.

Have you ever tried Peter Thomas Roth
24K Gold Pure Luxury Lift & Firm Hydra-Gel Eye Patches? I went into a Macy’s and the woman working suggested them for my super intense dark circles. You leave them on for 10 minutes and my jaw dropped when I took them off. My under eye bags went from a dark color to red and any puffiness was gone instantly! It blew my mind so I splurged ($75 for a 30 day supply, but I don’t use them daily) and I’ve been obsessed ever since!

I love this post as I am also obsessed with clear skin! Have
you ever tried IPLs or mirco – needling? Have you found any non evasive procedures to help keep
your skin tight and clear? Xx

    • I haven’t! Besides this routine, I get a facial once every few months wit a glycolic peel but it’s just with an esthetician, no downtime or anything.

Thank you, thank you, for the skin care routine and products! I’m 49 and I have the skin of a 16 yr old , prone to breakouts due to hormonal changes! I can’t wait to try everything and get back to being au naturael! I’d love to not have to wear make up! I’m going to track my progress with the products before and after! I want that bare skin confidence again ! Thank you Eva!

Have you tried IRIS eye massager (FOREO) for the skin around the eyes? I’ve bought it a few weeks ago and it’s really relaxing. It’s supposed to mimic Asian tapping massage. It also helps with the absorption of creams and serums.

        Hey Eva!
Thanks for sharing your skincare regime with us! I wasn’t able to source some of your products from Australia (thanks to COVID, AND the only Australian suppliers being extortionists grrr), but I went with a couple of alternatives by Shani.
We should totally get together on a couple of the products…I can get the
SK-11 for AU$100 and send it to you (as it’s more expensive in the US), and you could get me the IS Clinical Active Serum (as I simply couldn’t source it at all) and send it to me haha (but seriously….no?)😉
I hope my purchases help, Sydney’s winter has been a cold, harsh, windy one and my skin is suffering! Dry AND oily with some breakouts! We kinda skip Spring here and will jump straight into the harsh conditions of a hot summer soon enough too…so here’s hoping I see some improvement🤞🏻
        Thanks again!

I was wondering what scar treatments products would you recommend? I’ve used Bio Oil and nothing changed and even rubbed vitamin e capsules on my skin. I’ve heard of Scarguard’s lightening serum and repair liquid. Have you ever used that?

I tried the Vichy pink mask and loved it! Thank you so much for the recommendation, otherwise I would have never tried it/know about it. And I’ve used their products for a while.
I’m also very excited about getting facial next week where they use and sell the IS Clinical line!
