My Primary Bedroom Makeover

Here’s a confession that might surprise you: we’ve lived in our house for three years, and until very recently, our primary bedroom was the one room I just… didn’t love. Not because anything specific was wrong with it, but because I had kind of put stuff in it, focused more on the more communal spaces (and the kids’ rooms), and called it a day. But did it feel like “us”? Not really. And, recently, this fact had started to bother me. I wanted to give my own, personal space the same care I gave all the others. I wanted to get it exactly right. I wanted to lie in bed and feel something! But honestly, nothing had inspired me enough to take the leap. I know that sounds a little dramatic for a room, but if you’re someone who believes your surroundings should feel like an extension of your soul, you’ll get it.

Then I found THE wallpaper. Capital T, capital W. It’s a wall mural by Sandberg called “Bloom,” and the moment I laid eyes on it, I was transported to the most gorgeous Italian villa you can imagine. Climbing florals, birds, and butterflies- that perfect balance between lush and restrained, romantic without being fussy. My whole body just said yes. You know that feeling when something clicks so deeply you almost can’t explain it? That was this wallpaper and me. A love story, truly. I knew immediately that it would mesh beautifully with the furniture and textiles we already had in the room while elevating the entire space in a way that felt both intentional and effortless.

Once the wallpaper decision was made, everything else fell into place. I decided to change the paint color on the ceiling, above the fireplace, and on all the trim to warm up the room and complement the mural’s palette. The result is this gorgeous, creamy warmth that wraps around you the second you walk in. It’s the kind of color that makes everything feel softer, more inviting, like the room is giving you a hug. Sometimes the simplest changes- a shift in paint color, a commitment to cohesion- make the most dramatic difference.

I swapped out our old bed for an Eva Bed from my collection with BenchMade Modern, and the shape of it, mixed with the wood base and the most beautiful fabric (“Mcgee, Cream”), completes an Italian villa fantasy tenfold for me! I brought in an Eva Chair, too, and now I actually find myself curling up by the window with a book and spending time in that corner. I had never sat in the old chair that was there, because it was very rigid and not at all comfortable, and I love that I upgraded more of the room to actually being used simply by putting comfortable furniture in it!

We had the wallpaper installed while we were away in Copenhagen over the summer, which meant walking into the finished room for the first time was a full-on reveal moment. And let me tell you: I gasped. Actually, physically gasped. The transformation was breathtaking. It felt like stepping into a completely different home. Every night now, Ian and I crawl into bed, and it feels like we’re sleeping in the most beautiful boutique hotel. This makeover has been the most wonderful reminder of how transformative wallpaper can be in a space. If you’ve been on the fence about it, consider this your sign.

I also have to take a moment to shout out our incredible wallpaper installer, because they deserve all the love. Walter’s Wallpaper is a local small team, and they were an absolute dream to work with. Fast, meticulous, and so lovely. They even covered our light switches in the wallpaper so the entire look is completely seamless, which is the kind of detail that makes you want to weep with joy. I was truly blown away by their craftsmanship and care.

I couldn’t be happier with how this room turned out. After three years of waiting, I finally feel like our bedroom represents Ian’s and my style and aesthetic so perfectly: luxurious, cozy, serene, with just a little touch of whimsy. It was worth every moment of patience.
