There’s something about Fall that gives me The Shoppies! And with three kids who all have very different opinions about what goes on their bodies, that’s no small feat. I’m navigating everything from “I only wear athletic shorts” to “I need this in every color.” Comfort and versatility are always the name of the game in this household, because if it doesn’t feel good on their bodies, survive recess and art class, AND look cute for weekend plans, it’s not making the cut. This year’s Fall trends are making that easier than ever, and I’m genuinely excited about what I’ve been pulling together for all of us.
For the kids, it’s all about cozy layering pieces that can handle the unpredictable weather we get this time of year. Think soft flannels, puffer vests, and those perfectly oversized cable knit sweaters that work just as well out to dinner as they do at school drop-off. For the boys, I’m leaning into earth tones, cargos (which are having a MAJOR moment, no pun intended), wide-leg jeans, and fun fleece pieces. For Marlowe, it’s all about the Princess Tom Boy energy: bomber jackets, ballet flats with denim, plaid skirts, and the fashion-forward sweat sets. She’s at the age where she has real opinions, and honestly? I really love that our personal styles are so different and distinct from each other.
For me, Fall is when I come alive style-wise because LAYERING. I could write a love letter to layering. A great trench over a fitted turtleneck, a blazer tossed over a simple tee and wide-leg jeans, a chunky scarf that pulls the whole thing together: that’s my happy place (again with the puns!). This season I’m really into rich burgundies, deep forest greens, and classic camel tones. The 1980’s redux is still here, and I’m here for it! Who doesn’t enjoy a rugby polo or a striped sweater? It’s so Benetton! IYKYK. I’ve also been reaching for squared-toe flats nonstop, and investing in a few elevated basics that I know I’ll rotate through every week until spring. The older I get, the more I appreciate investment pieces that truly stand the test of time and trends.
Here’s some fun tea that always makes me smile: when I was just a couple years older than Marlowe, I actually modeled for the now-defunct AF Quarterly for Abercrombie & Fitch! So every time my kids pull on their Abercrombie pieces, especially Marlowe, I get this little pang of nostalgia that hits me right in the heart. We recently did our own little (totally unofficial) Abercrombie Fall campaign shoot, and it was such a funny and fun experience. I even pulled out a football! Seeing her in those pieces, knowing I once stood in front of a camera wearing that same brand at not much older than she is now? Full circle, baby!
