Is there a type of cocktail that you’ll see on a bar menu and automatically get SO excited about? For me, it’s a Sake-tini! My liquor of choice has always been vodka because it’s easy for me to tolerate and doesn’t really make me hungover. As a result, I’ve always gravitated towards martinis. About ten years ago, I got really into Sake, which if you don’t know it is a Japanese rice wine. It has a beautifully fragrant taste and a super crisp finish. I love drinking a really cold glass of sake in the warmer months or enjoying it with sushi or other Japanese foods. I also love how complex and diverse so many different sakes are! It feels like there is as much to learn about it as there is with grape-based wines.
When I first saw a Sake-tini (aka Sake Martini) on a menu, I got SO excited. The drink was everything I expected it to be: fragrant, crisp, dry, and delicious! I’ve had lots of versions over the years, but the times that I’ve had it with a hint of cucumber have been my favorite. I thought I should work on creating the perfect one at home. After some trial and error, I found my perfect recipe, and I thought it was a great time to share!
I love serving Sake-tinis as the weather starts to warm up, and when Spring is in full force. You can pair this drink perfectly with takeout, or even try out my Miso Cod recipe, or my Buster’s Green Fish if you’re looking for a home-cooked meal to enjoy with it! I garnished this with little cucumber discs, but you could also throw a canned lychee in there with a teaspoon of the lychee syrup if you want to mix things up a bit. Let me know how you like this if you try it!
Ingredients…
(makes 1 cocktail)
- 1 ounce Vodka
- 4 ounces Sake
- 1/2 tablespoon Simple Syrup
- 1/2 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
- 1/2 large cucumber, peeled and cut into chunks
Step 1:
Add all ingredients and shake it up!
Put all ingredients into a cocktail shaker. With a muddler, or the end of a wooden spoon, crush up (muddle) the cucumber into the liquids until they are well broken up. Add about a cup of ice into the cocktail shaker, put on the lid, and shake vigorously for 30 seconds. Strain into a martini glass and garnish with cucumber. Enjoy responsibly!
