I’ll be 100% honest and say that Major’s bedroom was the most fun room in the house for me to design! Maybe that’s because Maj and I have a shared love of bright colors and mixed prints, or maybe it’s because I got to design a dramatic room for my drama-loving child. LOL. Either way, creating this room was SO energizing for me creatively! And Major absolutely LOVES it. When I was starting out dreaming up the design for Major’s own space in our new home, I asked him a lot of questions about how he wanted his room to be. “I don’t know, Mom. I want it to be COOL. And, like, a stage. I want it to feel kinda like a hotel room, and so special. And I want a FOUR POSTER BED.” To this, I replied: Say Less. LOL. I was on it like a flash!
When I was thinking about bold prints and elevated textures, my mind went first to pairing a really impactful wallpaper, with textiles in the same color story. This is a trick I use to make sure that mixed prints aren’t overwhelming, and that they all go nicely together without causing a headache. I found this wallpaper at Serena & Lily and immediately fell in love. As I was browsing on the site, these gold bedside lamps popped up with a crimson shade, and immediately my concept was born in my mind! I planned to create an ultra-chic Red, White, and Blue theme that felt almost like a British Hotel Room. I snagged the wallpaper and lamps and had our amazing painters create a custom blend for Major’s ceiling to match the shades of the lamps.
I fell in love for the second time when I found the fabric for the drapery! It’s actually also Serena & Lily, but shortly after I bought it, they discontinued the print which is truly a tragedy. I love it so much, and I would have bought even more just to have for future projects if I had known!
After securing an ultra-modern canopy bed for my little guy, we were well on our way to this room looking and feeling just as I wanted it. I even mixed High/Low, as I love to do, by using a flush mount light and a bench from Target. I just covered the bench with fabric to match the color story! I love the drama that this room brings, and it fits Major’s personality so perfectly.
I’ll put all the design details below, but feel free to ask any questions that you may have!
