It’s that time to celebrate all the incredible Father Figures out there! I say father figures because, if there’s one thing I’ve learned in my 41 years, it’s that there are many ways of becoming a treasured “Father” in somebody’s life. That role is so beautiful when done with intention, and can create a huge impact. Passing on your DNA is not what makes you a Father. Showing up is what makes you a Father. At least in my book! And whenever I see male figures in people’s lives who are intentionally enriching the lives of the people who love them…there is nothing more powerful.  Whether they are Dads by birth, Stepfathers, Adopted Fathers, Godfathers, Grandfathers, Coaches, treasured teachers, or anyone who holds the glimmer of love, adoration, safety, and respect in a child’s eyes, I am all about celebrating those Dads who are out there doing the most!

I’ll also say that our culture is still catching up when it comes to setting Fatherhood expectations.  We’re at such a pivotal stage in a new wave of self-reflection, therapy, and healing– and I commend the men who are out there doing the work, healing their generational trauma, and showing up for the people who love them in a much healthier and whole way. As somebody who had a very nontraditional relationship with fatherhood growing up, my message to all the dads is simple: DO THE WORK. If you do the work on yourself, and show your child that you will walk the walk (not just talk the talk), it will set the groundwork for a really beautiful relationship.  I’m so so happy for those of you out there who have loving and present Fathers in your life, and please know how lucky you are!  The goal is never perfection. The goal is PRESENCE!
