Carnations are having a comeback, and nobody is happier than I am!  Carnations are super inexpensive, and used to be thought of as an outdated and cheesy bloom.  I beg to differ.  Grouped together in a bunch, or even as a monochrome arrangement, they are a colorful and beautiful flower that packs a serious design punch.  The best part? Carnations come in the most varied and nuanced colors– Seeing hundreds of different tones at the Flower Market one morning inspired me to do these Ombré arrangements! _1010794

The best part about these arrangements is that you can buy a lot of flowers for way less money.  I have three shades of pink here, but I recommend doing five or even seven progressing shades of color! The more the better! Also make sure that your vases or containers are uniform in order to place the emphasis entirely on the pops of color.  Find a very pale shade (I’m partial to pink) and fill the first vase.  Next move on to the slightly darker shade of color (The more nuanced the shift in color, the more fabulous your arrangement will look!) and fill another vessel, and so on until all of your vessels are uniformly filled with different shades of carnations.

I used this technique to decorate one very long banquet table for my girlfriend’s birthday, and it looked outstanding!

  1. Hi! I’m Ellie from Taste of Home magazine. We are doing a roundup of pretty carnation centerpieces, and I’d love to include this one. Could we post it in our piece? Will link to your blog and credit you for the photo, of course! Thanks! Ellie
