I met Elsa Collins, the subject of this week’s “Eight By Eva”, when she was my teacher!  Kyle and I took her amazing Expecting Parents Class at her company, BabyTalk LA, when I was six months pregnant with Marlowe.   I loved Elsa’s bold, organized, and take-control approach to parenting, and a couple Girls Nights Out later we became fast friends! (She also is the only person who can drag me to an early morning Soul Cycle class)  I still rely on her for great parenting and health advice, since this gorge lady manages to balance it all– She started her own business while raising three kids after all! Below, Elsa answers my eight favorite questions:

        1.  What is the best parenting advice you have received?
Most adults aren’t rational human beings…so why do you expect a child to be? This was a more of a self-realization than a piece of advice anyone gave to me.  Once I realized that my expectations of my kids were sometimes above and beyond what I expect from an adult, it was easier to move on from tantrums and difficult situations.

        2.  What is your greatest challenge as a parent?
Learning how to let go! Every parent (and yes I will say more likely the primary caregiver here) feels they “know best”, they can “do it quicker” and feel like “I’ll just do it so we can get through the day”.  For me it’s no different when my husband is around.  I know he is a capable human being so he can take the kids out alone, make sure they are fed and yes get them home (usually later than I want) but he gets them back!.  As someone who is Type A, it’s hard for me to let go of the control sometimes and let him do things his way.  It isn’t my way but I need to respect and allow it.  After he does something solo it just affirms he is capable and I am flexible…somewhat.

3.  What’s the latest with your kid(s)? Any new dynamics? Funny quirks? Challenges?
My husband lives away about ten months out of the year coaching with the Golden State Warriors.  He just left this week and school is about to start.  So we have to say goodbye to a fun summer together as a family and get back to having our version of a team down here in LA.  My older girls know they need to help out in the morning by getting dressed and making their beds while I get their little brother ready for school.  Right now it’s just a matter of making sure everyone is happy with breakfast!
A funny quirk is happening right with my youngest Massimo. Or as I jokingly call him, Massimo Messi– he  has become obsessed with soccer overnight.  And yes, at The Happily Eva’s house, stole Marlowe’s soccer ball which I will reimburse you for later.  So it is all soccer all of the time.  Jarron says he’s ok with it.  But he also says as soon as he gets too tall it’s on to basketball.  So until then, we are playing it basically all hours of the day.

4.  What is your dream day as a family?
It sounds corny, but we are a Disneyland family.  So our dream day is getting to the park right when it opens, hitting up the rides (especially Cars Land and Thunder Mountain…it helps when your dad is 6’11. Even my 3 year old is tall enough for all the rides!) and getting out of there by lunch time! We have the parks down to a science.  The only problem is my stride can’t keep up with Jarron’s, so I sort of end up power walking/jogging around.  Baths at home and dinner time followed by the sitter getting there so the parents can catch a movie!!

   5.  Kid item you can’t live without?
It changes with every age! A lovey when they were young and transitioning into the crib or bed.  I love Angel Dear loveys.  As they get older though, the items are changing seasonally.  For a month, stickers kept them well entertained at a restaurant.  Magnatiles at home are genius.  And at the end of the day, who doesn’t love an old school puzzle.

6.  Favorite local kids activity?
Taking a picnic at the Getty Museum! It is a gorgeous way to spend the day outdoors.

7.  How do you unwind?
It sounds crazy but after I put my kids to bed, I have dinner and then open up the biggest…FROYO ever.  This literally helps me unwind because I know everyone is asleep and I just get to ENJOY it slowly as it melts.

8.  What are your favorite beauty products?
So many! For hair, Moroccan Oil shampoo and conditioner.  For my skin, Kiehl’s Powerful Strength Line Reducing Concentrate.  And if I could only have a couple of makeup items, Givenchy Bronzer, Maybelline Lash Sensational Mascara and Bobbi Brown Lip Gloss.
