I saw a pair of kitty cat ear hair clips at a chic children’s clothing store and I loved them so much I wanted them in every color for Marlowe! That is, until I saw the price tag.  I couldn’t believe some little (albeit adorable) hair clips could cost so much money!  I gave them the once-over and decided I could make my own at home– and make them I did. Tons of them! Just visit your local craft store, check out this tutorial, and a creative hour later you will have some little kitty cats running around the house.  Just in time for, ahem, HALLOWEEN!

WHAT YOU WILL NEED:

  • Sharp scissors
  • 1 pencil
  • Hot glue gun + glue inserts
  • 1 sheet of felt (1 sheet can make up to 3 pairs of ears)
  • 1 package of alligator hair clips
  • 1 sheet heavy duty template plastic
  • Kitty Ear decorations: pompoms, bows, ribbon, glitter, sequins– be creative!

DIRECTIONS:

  • Begin by cutting out your shapes.  Draw the shape of your kitty ears on the template         plastic.  Cut out one as a guide, and use that to cut out the rest of your shapes.  You             will need two kitty ear shapes of template plastic, and four kitty ear shapes of felt.              To cut the felt shapes, simply hold the plastic ear shape against the felt and cut                     around it with your scissors.
  •  Next, glue them together.  It works best if you apply the glue to the plastic, and then         stick the pieces of felt on either side like a sandwich.  Put a thin line of glue around             the inner edge of the ear and seal the out edges of felt together to make sure it has a         cohesive shape.
  • Now attach the hair clips.  You want to attach them to the flat side of the clip.  Hold             the hair clip open, and place your finger, or a stack of 3 pennies, between the ends of          the prongs of the clip to hold it open.  Place a line of hot glue on the bottom of the              kitty ear, and place on the flat side of the clip, towards side with the spring.  Allow             the glue to dry before you let the clip close, or else it will be stuck!
  • Repeat a mirror version of the previous step on the other matching kitty ear.
  • Now it’s time to decorate your kitty ears!! Follow my designs below or create your own!
