My daughter came out with a comb-over. I’m not even close to kidding. Marlowe’s hair was the very first thing I noticed when I held my crying baby for the first time, and everyone in the room was shocked. Of course if you’ve seen my husband you know exactly where she gets it from, but to see a newborn with that much hair was new to me! It had the immediate effect of making her look like a tiny wizened grown up, and people still comment on it when we are out and about. Of course when it was short, that was one thing, and it kind of styled itself in to what I fondly referred to as “The Seacrest”. But it grew quickly, and then I was faced with the dilemma of having to style my infant’s hair. Every. Day. She now has what I like to call a “Glamour Mullet”– because the back has grown just a tiny bit faster than the rest– and in these ten months I have learned a lot about baby hair accessories. Here are some of my faves. Make sure you have a comb and a nice soft baby brush too!
1. BOWS My number one Go-To. I like everything from two smaller ones clipped on to pigtails, to a huge one attached to a high ponytail or holding back a part. My favorite brand is Wee Ones because they come in tons of colors and feel well made. I buy the simple grosgrain style. Southern Sisters Bows has some precious options too!
2. CLIPS When Marlowe was tiny I bought her teeeeeny little clips that were more an accessory than a necessity but as her bangs have grown I’ve had to find some more heavy-duty options. Hair Clippy has some good non-slip styles, there are tons of options on Etsy, and even at the drugstore. Just make sure you’re careful when putting them in since they can be pointy! Let’s keep both eyes.
3. BOBBY PINS A super modern option is to buy colored or gold bobby pins. You can get these on Amazon or at a beauty supply store. Pulling the hair in to a side part, slip four or five bobby pins in right beside each other for statement but sleek look. I like to do gold on gold, or alternating bright colors. This is also a sassy start to some seriously adorable pigtails.
4. ELASTICS Sometimes Mommy is exhausted and Marlowe just gets a nice little Triceratops horn on the top of her head. We could call this the Pebbles Flintstone look. (She also gets called “Cindy Lou Who” sometimes…and the mouthy stranger gets a knuckle sandwich) If you’re going to use elastics though, using the right one is everything. I buy Scuncii Girl “no damage” elastics at the drugstore. They’re extremely thin, very soft and stretchy, and come in muted colors. And you end up with about a trillion– I bought one package and it’s lasted me six months! Warning: these are a major choking hazard, so keep them away from your crazy kids!
5. HAIR WRAPS Such a cute statement piece. I like to put one on Marlowe to hold her bangs back when her hair is in a ponytail, and she looks about 27 years old. Then I cry and take it off. My favorites are from Mini Scoops. Also check out the grown up version Hot Sundae for some Mother/Daughter matchy-matchy flavor.
