Eva Amurri takes a trip to Gault in Westport, CT.

As a Westport, Connecticut resident for the last 8 years, I’ll tell you that the name Gault is almost synonymous with the town itself. Everyone here knows of it, not only because the brand is a purveyor of everything from propane and oil, HVAC and generators, to natural stone, landscape materials, and lumber– but also because it is one of the most trusted names in construction.  Even before I was involved with The Westport Project, I was a Gault Customer!

The Gault legacy was born way back in 1863, with the establishment of a small freight hauling business (with a horse and carriage!), which shortly expanded with the purchase of a lumber yard, and then the addition of the heating oil business. Over six generations, the brand grew its family of offerings into the arms of the business that exists today: Gault Stone & Landscape Supplies, and Gault Energy & Home Solutions– both of which are still family-owned and run. I utilize products from both sides of Gault daily!

Gault is deeply rooted in the Westport community, with a strong emphasis on community support, preservation, and impressive customer service. As somebody who has worked a lot recently with generational, family-owned businesses, I’ve noticed that Gault has deep dedication to serving the community that watched it rise– a quality that must exist in its owners to be able to survive through six generations! That customer-first mentality, responsiveness, and integrity are what the family members of Gault would tell you have driven their brand forward through the decades. Innovation and delivery on quality are two things that the Gault family takes pride in, and this is perfectly displayed in its crown jewel: the Gault Westport Showroom.

The first time (YEARS ago) that I stepped foot in the Westport showroom, I was incredulous. I don’t know what I was expecting, as I embarked upon picking out patio stone, but a sleek and well-appointed showroom with SO much variation in product and such an easy way to navigate it all was NOT what I thought I was walking into.  It looked and felt like a department store for stone! Quite frankly (as somebody who has done multiple home renovations), the process of selecting such an important and expensive part of a home renovation SHOULD feel like an experience, should it not? And, mostly, it should feel like a complete journey where you’re able to touch, feel, and experience the products you’re selecting– and envision how they’re all going to come together for your particular project. Since that visit all those years ago, the Gault Westport showroom has gotten even more impressive, and so have the product offerings.

We knew, as we wrapped our minds around hardscaping and stone products for The Westport Project, that Gault was an easy choice to make sure we were creating a space that not only felt beautifully designed but also functional and modern. And I was excited to head over to the showroom to watch it all come to life in real time! The O’Dell Group has been working with Gault for decades– their stone product really is the best of the best– but they were just as excited as I was to explore Gault’s new-to-market, proprietary product: The Gault Collection.

The Gault Collection is a curated selection of porcelain pavers designed around Gault Stone’s most popular natural stones. They have the look and feel of natural stone (the appearance is uncanny!), with the durability of porcelain. As somebody who knows a thing or two about building spaces that stand up to the chaos of real life, I have heard SO much about how much easier porcelain is to deal with than natural stone…particularly for high-trafficked areas! Porcelain pavers are fade-proof and won’t crack in extreme temperatures. They dry quickly and resist moss and mildew. They stay cooler, so you don’t have to high-step it around your pool or patio on hot days, and it is WAY more resistant to staining as well.  Take it from me, who had a house guest spill an entire glass of red wine on my bluestone patio once…and it never recovered. The Gault Collection porcelain pavers also perfectly coordinate with Gault’s natural stone offerings, so you can create a cohesive pairing throughout your landscape design scheme. I love how innovative this product offering is, and one that is really impactful for Gault’s customers.

As somebody embarking on a personal backyard renovation after The Westport Project concludes, I was really excited to stop by the Gault Westport showroom with my friends at the O’Dell Group…to not only find stone for our Smart Home design/build, but also to get ideas for my next project! From the moment we set foot into the showroom, the Gault team members were there to assist us with lots of expertise and answers to our questions. All the stone offerings were there for us to touch and feel (am I the only one out there who NEEDS TO touch construction materials when they’re going in my home?!), plus we were able to carry samples around the showroom to actually see the products juxtaposed next to each other as they’d be in the final design.

Any prospective customer can pop into the Westport showroom at any time to peruse stone products. The Gault team members are there to help you ideate your construction project. But, there are also QR codes next to the stone product displays so you can learn more info and see examples of them installed, if you prefer to tour the showroom on your own. I loved the big screen setup in the showroom where they had lots of previous projects on display to inspire you. Anita and Mary already have the most beautiful ideas in motion for The Westport Project home, but as I consider my own home renovation, it was really nice to see what it’s like to just pop in as a customer who isn’t a part of the construction world. The way that the showroom is run and designed makes it easy and non-intimidating to start planning without a ton of prior knowledge. In fact, I’d tell you that the Westport showroom is even the perfect place to visit if the ONLY thing you know is that your current backyard vibe has GOT TO GO. Just visit, walk around, ask questions, and dream, baby!

The Gault stone and porcelain products that we picked out are going to upgrade The Westport Project home in countless ways, and I’m so, so excited for all of you to see them installed. It’s truly amazing how timeless and elegant these spaces become when the right products are utilized in the construction process. Since there’s going to be a bit of a wait before the big house reveal, but spring hardscaping reno season is upon us, I figured I’d share the exact Gault products we chose below and a little sneak peek! It’s always nice to get an idea of what other people are choosing to give some context.  Let me know if there are any other specific questions I can answer, and I’ll do my best!

Riverside Blue Porcelain Rooftop from The Gault Collection

One of the most high-end features of The Westport Project home is the absolutely insane roof deck, with 180-degree ocean views. It features porcelain pavers from Gault that look exactly like gorgeous bluestone but are much more durable, stain-resistant, mold and mildew-proof, and stay cool for bare feet!

Marsh Grey Porcelain Loggia Patio from The Gault Collection

A cool feature of the yard and hardscaping of this smart home is a loggia that extends from the ground level out to the yard and acts as a three-season space. These porcelain pavers mimic natural stone but are more practical!

Thermal Bluestone Stair Treads

I’m a huge fan of natural stone stair treads.  These are flame finished for a consistent, slip-resistant texture.  This particular stone type is so timeless and classic!

Chatham Grey Treads for Loggia Patio

Chatham Grey is a light grey granite defined by its dynamic movement and striking, white veining. It matches perfectly with the Marsh Grey Porcelain tiles and extends the elegance of the space to the outdoors.

Lake Ave Blend Thinstone Veener

This is a product we LOVED, and we’re hoping to find a place to use it! I figured we’d mention it just in case! Gault’s Lake Ave Blend Thinstone Veneer is a custom-crafted mix of Liberty Hill, Salem Dark, Tower Hill, and Blue Ridge stones in a lightweight and versatile format. It’s perfect for enhancing fireplaces, foundations, and outdoor living spaces, plus outdoor kitchens or walls.
