Today we did something I had been dreaming about since my newborn came out of my body with a head of hair (and hairdo!) to rival Ryan Seacrest’s: an official HAIRCUT! I had been waiting, as her hair grew longer and longer, for the perfect time to shape it and give it a little ‘do. I was kind of nervous because I really only wanted it trimmed (As any woman can tell you “just an inch” can turn in to six if you’re not careful!) and I also didn’t know how my squirmy and energetic child would react to sitting still while somebody she didn’t know did something to her head.

Our Nanny, Maria, recommended the kids’ salon The Yellow Balloon and I am so grateful she did! What we experienced today was so much more than a “first haircut”. It was a fun, funny, and magical experience that all three of us will remember forever.
Marlowe had a basket of toys to play with during her cut, as well as a little cup of animal crackers to snack on. Everybody was so sweet with her, even though she “drove” her yellow cab like she had a vendetta against its owner! Her haircut is adorable, not too short like I had feared, and the blow out she got at the end put me over the edge! I mean I almost died watching my little girl get her first blowout. CAN YOU EVEN DEAL WITH IT?!!! She even got to pick out a brand new bow to top off her new look! Marlowe was so proud of her haircut, and even happier about her prized Yellow Balloon that she received as we left.
The salon’s owners are beyond sweet– and on their second generation of haircuts!– and they were happy to offer one lucky Happily Eva After reader a gift certificate for their child’s first haircut! I love supporting local businesses run by wonderful people, and The Yellow Balloon salon totally exemplifies that.
If you would like to enter to win the gift certificate, please see the details on my Instagram Page. Open to Los Angeles residents only!

Awww. This is exactly what I had in mind when I had my first daughter.
After weeks of visits to the NICU and finally bringing Kyra home I prayed that my mother’s fore-telling me that THIS baby would have tight kinky curls once her hair grew. Well, Kyra, does not have kinky hair like her father but instead inherited a mix of mine and my hubby’s hair. My 3 year old has these gorgeous classic curls that somehow look like she is having the perfect hair day every day. Oh, except in the mornings when she has bed hair (we call it her lion face). Being true to her personality my baby girl took it upon herself to give herself her very first haircut!!! Thus taking this experience away (gulp). Looking on the bright side, she did manage to give herself a layered haircut that actually does not look that bad. Until we put up her hair. My second daughter (20 months) has more relaxed curls. I still get equal compliments on the girls hair. I eagerly await for the day I can take the girls in for their first “official” haircut.
Yahaira,
Oh my goodness, I can’t even imagine what you must have thought when she gave herself a chop!! ahhh!! I’m sure she still looks adorable though 😉
I can’t wait to hear about how their first official cut goes!!
