We decided to plan a family photo shoot right as Marlowe turned One to commemorate the milestone. I was also pregnant at the time, and felt that having some memories with Marlowe’s little sibling in my belly would be so fun to look back on. Even though the pregnancy didn’t last, I’m still so happy we have these pictures to celebrate such a special time in all of our lives. And I think it’s a great idea to get together during these occasions and have them photographed by somebody who knows what they’re doing!
We always take our family photos with Nina Suh from Love And Lemonade Photography (she also has contributed to Happily Eva After!) because we love how she captures the essence of our little family. Marlowe is so used to her by now that Nina manages to snap some pretty hilarious moments, especially since it’s become clear that our little lion is the opposite of shy!
Here are my tips for a fun and successful Family Photo Shoot:
- Schedule the shoot right after nap time. Duh, but also don’t underestimate the power of denial. Think your kid will be able to “make it” an extra hour while you capture that great light? Think again. NOTHING worse than paying for time with an amazing photographer…who is capturing images of your cranky child.
- Bribery. It’s ok to give your kid a cookie before a photo shoot. Or a new little toy, or promise the iPad for after. I draw the line at soda, but you get the idea.
- Feel great about yourself. I know as a Mom that we often put ourselves last on the “getting ready” totem pole. Not today. Disappear for an hour and make your hair and makeup look great. Or go someplace and get a blowout! You want to look back on these pictures and feel like you were as glowing and easy breezy beautiful as you imagine yourself in your Mom Fantasies…Ryan Gosling included.
- Coordinate your outfits! We got so many compliments on our coordinated stripes at Marlowe’s birthday party that I decided to repeat them for our photo shoot! I think it gives such a sweet quality to the photographs and ties everything together. And outfit coordination doesn’t have to be cheesy– Below I’ve included some inspiration style boards for your next Family Photo Shoot!

Great post. I’ve been thinking about my twins, boy & girl, 1st bday shoot in March. (I know got awhile but fun to brainstorm) Since they’re twins there seems to be a lot of fun options. I hadn’t thought about what my husband & I should wear & I love the idea of matching without looking like the Kardashians windbreaker family photo. Lol. Luv the blog. I read it at night while rocking a baby to sleep. I often read your tips to my husband while he’s also rocking a baby.
Ashley 🙂
Hi Ashley!
Thank you so much for the kind feedback– I’m SO happy that you are enjoying the site (and your hubby is too!) I actually started dreaming up the site while breastfeeding and rocking MY little one to sleep many months ago, so it makes me so happy to hear that I’m keeping you company while you do the same!

Love following you on Instagram and I usually use the link from your blog but it’s not working for me and I’m not sure why. This is the address it goes to, has something changed? I can’t get to it from Google either. Help! https://instagram.com/4evamartino
Hi Katie!
Thank you so much for the love! And thank you also for drawing my attention to this! I just fixed it so it should be working fine now. (I changed my Insta and Twitter handles to reflect the blog and then didn’t update the blog platform. Doy. )
You got my back, girl! 😉
