Be honest, fellow SoCal dwellers: is there anything quite as scary as a ferocious….hungry…terrible TWO FOOT TALL SHARK?!! I didn’t think so. This year, we decided to forgo the princess costume and dress Lowie up as something that she really is: a water-loving animal with some scary looking teeth and a furious temper. Naturally, Kyle and I followed suit as a Lifeguard (how apropos) and the sad but hot Surfing Victim of said shark. I think Marlowe really has enjoyed getting in to character, AKA biting us.
So, funny story. A few days before we took these pictures, I decided to have Lowie try her shark costume on for size. I got her in it, marveled for a quarter of a second at how brilliant my idea was, and then was absolutely horrified when my child threw the biggest tantrum I had ever seen her throw. Not only did she dislike wearing her costume, she HATED it. She screamed bloody murder and flailed around until I took it off her and promised never to do it again (Liar). Later that night, I panicked. I texted my girlfriends video evidence of her hatred, and they all wrote me back “LOL. Good luck”. So I implemented a Halloween costume boot camp! I chose a happy time of day (right after lunch, for my little one) and put her in the costume for ten minutes at a time while doing something fun. We picked flowers together as a shark, we played soccer in the yard as a shark, and we even ate a cookie as a shark (I’m not proud of that one). The point is, by the time we took these pics not only was she ok with wearing the costume, but she was totally psyched to be a Shark! Maybe too much– Kyle and I both got some pretty impressive bite marks that day. In any case, my recommendation to you is TRY ON THE COSTUMES. Then plan accordingly.
Last year, our family Halloween costume was a Bunny (Marlowe), a Carrot (Me), and a Farmer (Kyle), which I thought was so cute. My husband’s thoughts: “So lame.” I am happy to report that this year, Kyle is singing a much happier tune. He is comfortable, gets to wear fake blood, and there isn’t a princess sparkle in sight. Just wait until next year when Lowie knows Disney, babe!
Have you guys decided on any cute or funny family Halloween costumes?? Let me know in the comments below!!

This year we have our 21 month old son dressing up as Cookie Monster and my husband and I are going as chocolate chip cookies. We had a simile nightmare trying on his outfit at first. He refused to wear the hat and after a few days of making it fun to be Cookie he is very excited about Halloween.
Lily,
Omg, that is SO cute. I’m dying. Great costume idea!

My 3 year old is going as a witch and my 20 month old is going to be Dorothy complete with a stuffed Toto in a basket! She can say “tick o teet” and I taught the 3 year old to say “I’ll get you my pretty, and your little dog too!” I can’t wait!!!
Marisa,
That is so precious! I think a little Dorothy is one of the best little girls costumes!

He sure is! 😉

Oh my gosh. This is adorable. I love the picture of you and Marlowe looking at each other and Kyle looking at you both. It’s so fun to dress them up before they can decide 🙂
Thanks so much Chelsea!!

This is SO cute! Brightened my day:)
Oh my gosh, these are the cutest outfits ever!!
I love this. One of the best and most original family costumes I’ve seen! We haven’t done a family costume theme yet but this inspires me to try for next year!
(super late & way after halloween, but still!)
LOVE the shark idea!! enjoy every chance you have to coordinate with them … my 4 littles are now 4 teenagers and the idea of doing a family costume is abhorrent to them – dang it! i’ve even tried just getting the girls to do it – mean girls; the 4 main bellas – no go.
