Something I talk about a lot when questioned about instituting an enjoyable Work-Life-Balance is the importance of dedicated family time.  Date Nights are so important for Mommy and Daddy, but Family Dates are just as important for everyone!  Kyle and I make sure that we dedicate a couple hours a week (at least) to spending quality time with Marlowe, together as a trio.  This past weekend we had a really fun, easy breezy afternoon filled with great food, a nice walk in the sunshine, and a special treat for Ms. Marlowe!

Picture

We started off by enjoying a delicious brunch at The Tasting Kitchen in Venice.  Kyle and I ordered chicken and waffles, and steamed clams (and an amazing glass of Sancerre!), and Marlowe enjoyed her first Southern biscuit! (I also brought some cut-up baked chicken and peas for her, but she was less than interested in them after tasting the biscuit.  Go figure) She spotted a little girl at the table next to us who was eating eggs and toast, and screamed “Pan!” at her repeatedly (“Bread” in Spanish) while also blowing kisses.  Her begging technique is impeccable, but alas the little girl had some steely resolve and did not share.  I can’t say I blame her.  Daddy saved the day and ordered Marlowe her own “Pan“.  The World continued to turn.

Next, we took a little walk around Abbot Kinney Blvd in the sunshine, and visited a few stores.  One chic little boutique, Satine, had a couple of friendly dogs that Marlowe was obsessed with (Surprise, Surprise!)  Overall, this portion of the day– with husband and baby in tow– was decidedly short.  I must return soon on my own… or with a slightly more interested girlfriend.

And of course the Family Date would not have been complete without a special treat for Marlowe– namely her very first taste of ICE CREAM!  We opted for the scrumptious and classic Vanilla, and let’s just say Marlowe is in love.  She even gave me a tiny bite which I found to be very generous…nobody likes to share their ice cream.  I loved watching Marlowe experience such a childhood classic for the first time, but I was especially happy to be doing it together, as a family.  I can’t wait for our next little outing!

      Hi Valerie!
Yes, we are raising Marlowe to be bilingual! I grew up bilingual (English and Italian) and I really wanted the same for Marlowe. I prefer her to have her second language be Spanish because it is such a pervasive language in the United States, as well as being spoken in many other countries.
We hired a nanny that speaks only in Spanish with Marlowe. I speak Spanish to her as well on the weekends. Her very first word was in Spanish– “Agua”!

That is SO good! We are doing the same thing in our household, as well! My daughter is 2, and when I am in a pinch, and need to get ready without her crawling all over me, I turn on “El Mundo de Elmo” on Hulu. (Elmo’s World). it’s totally in Spanish, not cheesy translated, and it’s her favorite guy in the world: Elmo! It’s age appropriate and teaches a new concept each episode (ex. Zapatos, Ojo, Gatos, etc). It’s the best show I’ve found for a child her age and it allows me to get dressed in the morning, guilt free! If you have Hulu or if you don’t, it’s TOTALLY worth it.
        Best!

Is she wearing a teething necklace? If yes.. Is there one you are liking for her and when should you (did you) start having baby wear one? My little one is almost 5 months and I’m starting to wonder if it should be soon! Eeeek! :/ (I’m not ready!)

      Hi Mel!
Yes, she wears a Baltic Amber Teething Necklace! I recommend getting one from a natural baby store near you, rather than buying one online. I think it’s important to get the right length as well as to feel the quality in person.
Marlowe started hers at five months, and I think it really helps! Just remember to remove it when bathing.
