As we’ve all figured out by now, fashion trends come and go. It’s obviously not smart to invest heavily in them, but sometimes a trend comes along that makes you think, “Daaaaaamn, that’s CUTE!” Henceforth my relationship with The Embellished Sweatshirt. I love the glammed out yet casual vibe of these tops, and I think they look cool with anything from a pair of sexy leather pants to a cute little skirt and booties. The only problem is most of them retail ridiculously high– over $100! (Super cute examples here and here) So what is an amateur seamstress to do? Make one herself, obvi! So make one I did. It took me twenty minutes, and it cost me $30! I am in NO way an expert at sewing– I’m very sure that if I can do it, you can do it. Here is my DIY to make a super cool embellished sweatshirt; mix up sweatshirt color and necklace combos to make it your own!
You Will Need:
- 1 Sweatshirt (I used this one, but this one is also super inexpensive)
- 1 “Statement Necklace” (I used this, but I also love this and this)
- Pliers
- Needle and thread (to match the necklace)
- Sharp scissors
Directions:
First, measure the necklace against the collar of the sweatshirt. Get a sense of the placement you like, and if you want to, pin the necklace in place where you will be sewing it. Otherwise eyeball it. Next, remove the clasp hardware from the necklace so it isn’t hanging off– re-close the loop after removing. Now, sew the necklace in place, starting with the end. Make sure that the necklace is laying flat against the collar of the sweatshirt as you work to avoid puckering. Choose 4 to 6 places along the necklace to secure it to the sweatshirt. Make sure to hide the stitches, and tie each one off well. Lastly, trim any hanging strings. OPTIONAL: Cut the sleeves off! I left a bit to make a roll, but this style looks great as a true sleeveless, or even as a long sleeved sweatshirt.
Would you guys ever rock this look?? Let me know in the comments below?? PS- I feel like this would be adorable on you Preggos out there!!!

Thanks, Lisa! It’s such a fun and simple way to add something new to your closet! 😉
Super cute idea- I definitely struggle in the sewing area but you make it look easy enough!
HI Jamie!
Yes, I am thinking I may do a little youtube video with the basics of sewing. I am a SUPER basic seamstress but I’ve had a lot of interest from people in learning so maybe I’ll shoot a little vid about the basics!
I absolutely love it! Definitely going to make one.
