My Back To School Must-Haves

Major Martino sporting his back to school look

Back to school is right around the corner, and I’m finally emerging from my denial and doing some shopping. LOL. Marlowe starts Kindergarten here in Westport, and Major starts his first year of Preschool! We have a lot of firsts going on in our house this year.  I’m finding myself strangely more emotional about Major’s transition to preschool than Marlowe’s to Kinder.  I think she is just so “ready” and fully pumped to start that it makes me less anxious and just as excited as she is! Major is excited too, but it’s going to be a big adjustment not having him around the house anymore during the day.  My emotions aside, I feel lucky that I have two kiddos who are raring at the bit for school to start, and I thought it was the perfect time to share some of my must haves!

  • Long sleeve shirts.  Layer in style! (1 & 9)
  • Essential Oil Hand Wipes. I love these all natural wipes that clean and disinfect with essential oils, and without harsh chemicals.  I keep them in the kids’ backpacks and in my own purse during the school year. (2)
  • New Backpacks! My kids have been using this brand of backpack for years, and I love that they can be personalized with the name to make it easy to find in a sea of similar styles.  Major picked Construction this year, and Marlowe picked unicorns and rainbows (shocker!). (3 & 4)

  • Denim Jacket. I got my kids these matching denim jackets and I love them so much! I plan on personalizing them with pins.  They were inexpensive too! (5)
  • Fleece Pullover. I love this unisex pullover because it’s so cozy, and layers well under jackets (6)
  • Water Bottles. These don’t drip or spill, and are easy to clean. (7)
  • Cute and comfy leggings. Stylish, but functional. (8)

  • Easy, inexpensive sneakers.  Slip on or velcro only, so they can do it themselves! (10 & 12)
  • Soft Lunch Box.  I love how sturdy these are, and they come in endless cute patterns to match the backpacks. (11)
  • Lunch Bento.  These are easy to pack and to clean! (15)
  • A good pair of jeans.  I always buy Major a great, high quality set of denim or two each fall.  They don’t wear out and keep him warm when it gets chilly! (13)

  • Anti-Lice Shampoo.  We dealt with lice once and I never care to again. I always use this line during the school year! (14)
  • Immunity Gummies.  These are a must for the germy days of school life. My kids love them, so delish too! (16)
  • Lunch Box Notes. The cutest way to remind your kiddos you care when they sit down for lunch! (17)

This post came at the perfect time – gearing up for my son to start up soon, too! what size are the backpacks for the kids – the mini? and how often do you use the lice shampoo? that’s my worst fear is him coming home with that one day!

    • I use it every time I wash their hair. For Marlowe, that is only twice a week, for Major more like 5. I actually found out that lice love clean hair so I washed it less times a week after that.

Backpacks are size “small”. Mini is too tiny in my opinion!

Thanks! I’ll pick up a bottle!

Agree – mini seems too small to even fit a lunchbox!

Have a great school year! I started reading your blog when you were pregnant with Major. Seems unreal that he is heading to preschool! That flew by!!

I want everything on this list! I ordered the water bottle because we’re in desperate need of a good one. The boys canvas shoes are on sale for $8.00!! Also I’m dying over the bento box. I’m addicted to those, I use them for myself as well as the kiddos.

    • This is my hit list for sure! All a must! The water bottles are the absolute only ones I use now. They’re the best and the only ones I let in to my kids’ beds or bags because they don’t leak

Yes! Thank you for these tips! Already ordered some of these items. I’m terrified of going through a lice experience although I’m sure i won’t be able to escape it in Kinder :(. Definitely trying those bento boxes.
